Collecting Christmas…

Old Santa in his sleigh along with his new tiny reindeer

I am hopelessly in love with all things Christmas.  It’s my favorite time of the year, and I love to decorate!  The first Christmas that Ed and I were married, I began collecting Christmas things.  We had to buy the tree, the ornaments, lights, and everything since we were just starting out, so the only extra decoration that I got was a  red flocked musical, rotating Santa that played Jingle Bells.  I still have it, although Santa is like me and is beginning to show his age…

I love animated Christmas dolls.  When they were popular, Ed would buy me a set for Christmas every year–for many years.  I’ve collected so many that I rotate displaying them each year.  Of course I have a few favorites, like my elf who sits and hammers on his toy boat all day, and who could resist those beautiful caroling dolls dressed in long velvet dresses?  I also love my Santa in his sleigh.  I have an animated Rudolph that goes with him, but this year I found eight tiny reindeer, (plus Rudolph) and added them to the sleigh.  The reindeer were the only new decorations that I bought this year because (a) there weren’t very many for sale,  and (b) I have no room left.

I collect village scenes, too.  I have a regular village, and I have a gingerbread village.  I alternate years displaying them.  Sometimes I display them on Ed’s pool table, but this year I downsized to the top of the television and just displayed half of the gingerbread village.

I also collect other kinds of decorations like curios–I call them “what nots”.  I have lots of shelves in the living room and I fill them up with my collected treasures.  Each year I lovingly wrap and unwrap each one and put them on display.  It’s a Christmas ritual at my house.  I put out most, if not all, of my curios before I decorate the tree.  I save the tree for last.

part of my Christmas collection from over the years

Of all of my collectables, my Christmas ornaments are my favorites.  It breaks my heart because I can’t hang every one of my ornaments on the tree, but there are just too many.  I finally made myself sort through and get rid of some of them a couple of years ago.  It was painful to me.  My most treasured ornaments are the two which belonged to my parents and used to hang on the tree when I was growing up.  They are glass and are about 50 years old.  It’s a miracle that they have survived that long…

How about you?  Are you a Christmas collector?  If so, what do you collect?  What kind of tree do you put up?  Do  you have a favorite ornament?  Leave me a comment and tell me.  Random.org will choose a comment number for me on Monday morning.  The winner will receive…a gift bag containing Winter Candy Apple antibacterial hand soap, and a tube of antibacterial hand cream in the same fragrance–by Bath and Body Works.

this week's prize

I can’t wait to read the comments.  I look forward to my weekend commenters, and giving away the prize.  Most people get so excited when they win!!!  Have a great weekend everybody.  The contest will end at midnight on Sunday.       Kathy

  2. I don’t know if we get a certain tree but it’s usually real. I like when they are, but I don’t mind fake ones either if they are cute and decorated nicely.

My mom used to collect all things snowmen but she has so many, we try and cut back but she has some really cute items for the holidays to bring out.

Thanks for the giveaway. Happy Holidays!

    • I love collecting snowmen, too. I save most of those for January when I pack up Christmas. Then I display the snowmen. Thanks for commenting! Kathy

  3. I don’t really collect any Christmas decorations, in part because I don’t have my own home yet. But I do love to see outdoor decorations, and I also love animated Christmas decorations. 🙂

    • I love outdoor decorations, too. I am sad that not as many people are decorating this year as in years past:( Thanks for commeting.

  4. I LOVE all of your decorations. We have an artificial tree that we put up every year. As far as decorations, we always buy a new one each year, not specific to any theme, but always something new. I also try & collect ornaments whenever we travel to show where we’ve been. We also enjoy looking at ornaments the kids have made over the years. It’s always a fun time decorating our tree, because it’s filled with so many memories through our Christmas ornaments.

    • You sound just like me–collecting, then remembering good times through your ornaments. I would be so sad if something happened to my collection. Thanks for commenting! Kathy

  6. We have only one tree this year, some years we have had as many as three trees. My favorite thing to put up each year is my Christmas village. It is a Victorian village. I have painted it myself. I used to be able to order the kits from Mary Maxim crafts but they quit carrying them. I guess my village won’t be growing. Anyway, there are 16 buildings that include homes, businesses, and a church. I have many, many people. SOme people are shopping, some are sledding, some are bringing home their tree, but all of a smile on their face. I clear off the top of the entertainment center to set up the village, and my husband puts a board across the front windows. There the village will be. I have just ordered a new camera and if it comes in time I will take pics to show on my blog. I too love CHRISTmas.

    • Oh, I love Christmas Villages, and that must’ve been great to be able to paint it like you wanted it! I don’t have an artistic bone in my body! You MUST post a picture on your blog whenever you get your camera, I’d love to see it! Thanks for the comment! Blessings, Kathy

  7. I have a lot of my ornaments from when I was a child and of course the ones that my children have made for me. Those are my favorite for sure!

  8. I think Christmas is my favorite time of year! I grew up in Hawaii, where real Christmas trees were much too expensive for the family budget and where snow was just that cool stuff you read about in books. 🙂 Now, that I live in Virginia, all of that has changed. My husband, toddler, & I just spent a terrific day picking out the perfect tree – a Fraser. And, we’re expecting our first snow fall tomorrow – perfect timing as we decorate our tree! Since we’re pretty young, we don’t have much of an ornament collection. But, I do love the sea shell ornaments that my mom sends us every year!

    • Wow, that sounds great–picking out a tree, then snow. We did the tree picking out thing for a few years, and I really loved it! I love Christmas tree farms. There aren’t any close by here anymore, though. Now that I am getting older, I am happy with my “real-looking” pre-lit tree 🙂 I hate cheap, fake-looking trees though. I always have to have the most realistic-looking one that I can afford. Thanks for the comment–and enjoy that tree!!!

  9. Well, personally I like real trees:) I don’t really care which kind but I am not real big on fake trees. Just me:D Please enter me in your giveaway. Thanks so much!!

  10. We are not real big on trees at our house. As far as collecting, I am a big collector of candles and candle holders. Around the holidays they have lots of nice holders. And the candle scents are soo good:) The winter pine and evergreen!! That is pretty much what I collect. Thanks for the chance at winning this great set:)
