Welcoming August With A Hodgepodge…

From this Side of the Pond

After a week off, it feels good to be back joining The Wednesday Hodgepodge again!  Many thanks to brand new “Nana”, Joyce, for taking the time to host this fun meme.  If not for Joyce, I’d probably have stopped blogging altogether, by now!  She keeps me disciplined–at least on Wednesdays 🙂

1. Do you try to set rules for yourself about how you use your time? Explain.

No rules!  I’m retired, remember?  I try to keep a schedule for eating and sleeping, but that’s about it.

2. Monday was National Lighthouse Day. Have you ever visited a lighthouse?

Yes, I’ve visited the lighthouse on St. Simon’s Island. (imagine that!)  The climb up was torturous (I had to stop and rest more than once), but the view from the top was awesome!  Let me also add, enjoying the view was a bit scary, since I’m afraid of heights, and I’ll never climb another lighthouse!

St. Simon’s Island Lighthouse

If not, do you have any desire to see one up close? Of the 10 Most Beautiful that made this list which would you most like to see in person-

Lindau Lighthouse (Germany), Fanad Lighthouse (Ireland), Portland Head Light (Maine), Yaquina Bay Light (Oregon) The St. Augustine Light (Florida), Peggys Point Lighthouse (Canada), Start Point Lighthouse (England), Tower of Hercules (Spain), Bass Harbor Head Station (Maine), and White Shoal Light (Michigan)

I’d most likely visit The St. Augustine Light since it’s the closest  lighthouse to me, but Bass Harbor Head Station in Maine sounds interesting, too.

When you’ve been away, what’s your ‘lighthouse’ telling you you’re on the right road home?

It’s the little green road signs that say “Gooseneck Community”, about a mile or two from our home.  There are two of them, one south of us, and another to the north.

3. What have you unintentionally stopped doing?

Blogging on a regular basis.

Is this something you need to pick back up and begin again, or is it something you need to let go of for now (or even permanently)?

I’d like to get back to blogging on a more regular schedule, but I’m not sure when that’s going to happen.

4. We’ve had a full week of August. Share a GRAND moment from your month so far.

Ed and I had the privilege of helping out with our church’s weekend youth camp, August 4-6.  It was a ‘first’ for both of us and we enjoyed it very much.

5. Tell us one song you love with the word ‘baby’ in the title.

I’m going to show my age by saying this:  “Baby Love”.  That song sure brings back some old memories!!!

I’ve never been able to bake a decent pound cake.  I’ve tried and tried.  Most  of my pound cakes found their way into the trash can, hardly touched.  All that changed a couple of weeks ago when I made a “Whipping Cream Pound Cake”!

I found the recipe on the back of the Swans Down Cake Flour box, and it’s a winner!  If I can make it turn out good, anybody can make it!

Interesting note:  I found a similar recipe, on-line, listed as Elvis Presley’s Favorite Pound Cake.  All I know is Elvis had great taste in cake 🙂

Here’s the link for the recipe if  anyone is interested: http://www.swansdown.com/recipes?id=246

  1. Pound cakes are not easy to do right. Mine are hit or miss with the dry level. My grandmother never baked a dry one. Of course, she hit a home run with everything she cooked. I’m with you on the height issue. Have a wonderful day!

  2. Okay, I just printed out that recipe. It looks wonderful. No wonder it’s a winner – with all that butter! And it’s fun to get another Bundt pan recipe! I’ll be making this one for an upcoming birthday. Thanks for the recommendation! And about that lighthouse, I’d love to see the view from the top of it. Have a great week!

  3. I love your grand moment. What a wonderful thing to do. Now I also looked everywhere for the perfect pound cake and found two that turn out perfect every time. I have never had a fail with the two and so it’s something I can take to pot lucks. Baby Love was one of my old favorites, too. Loved the Supremes and really all the Motown singers.

  4. That is one beautiful light house. Great answer on blogging, I guess that could have been my answer if I had thought about it. Love your song choice. The pound cake looks yummy. Thanks for the link.

  5. Your pound cake looks and sounds delicious! Blogging is something that has fallen by the wayside for me too. I enjoy writing on a regular basis. However, sometimes it takes too long and doesn’t leave me with enough tie to get other things done. The lighthouse picture is beautiful!

  6. I love pound cake, one of my favorite desserts. I have a chocolate pound cake I make at Christmas time and it’s soo good. I also have a delicious sour cream pound cake. Now I’m craving pound cake : ) My blog has been a bit wobbly this year too, but I’m hanging in there, because I still enjoy it and enjoy reading back on what I’ve recorded too.

  7. We retired years ago, too. It is great. We eat when we get hungry, we sleep when we remember to go to bed. We are glad we found blogging, too.

  8. Thanks for the recipe link, Kathy. I’ll have to give that one a try.

My blogging has gotten wonky on me, too, but I’m trying to get back in the groove of things. If it weren’t for Wednesday Hodgepodge, Friendly Fill-Ins, and Friday’s Hunt, I wouldn’t have any personal posts lately. I enjoy these too much to give them up. I hope you’re able to get back to the schedule that you want to have.

    Have a blessed week!

  9. The last pound cake I made from a Pinterest recipe was horrid!! I’ll make note of yours since you have given it your ‘thumbs-up’!!
